Eco-friendly beads made from recycled glass

These beads are perfect for any eco-friendly project as they are all made from receycled glass.
These beads used to be a mineral water bottle, but then the bottle was broken into shards, the shards cut up into small stripes and these were then made into beads.
A real family project: my daughter drank the sparkling water, my husband cut up the glass and I made the beads ;-)

New focal beads

I am in love with the second one but have no idea what kind of shard I used. It was a leftover
of some kind and when the bead went into the kiln it looked like a complete failure.
Imagine the nice surprise when I opened the kiln the next morning and found that the kiln fairies had visited me ;-)

Flame On Holland 2010 Impresssions

We went to the Flame on on sunday and had a wonderful time.

Visiting Manuela and her wonderful and whimsical beads.

While we chatted away, my daughter was inspectiong all her beads and of course we had to buy beads. I chose a dragonfly and my daughter got a kitty bead:
We also visited Dora Schubert and had to spend some money there as well.

She talked me into letting my daughter have a try at lampworking herself...now she is nagging me every day...we will see.
I bought a heart press and we watched some glass demos and then we drove on to Rotterdam which was only about 50km away and did some sightseeing there as well.

Using up my czech glass

A matching focal and a lovely set of color-changing spacers, all made from remnants of czech glass lying around in my studio. I have committed to using up all the old glass in order to make room for some new stuff ;-)

Lots of small sets

I love playing with beads: arranging beads into small samplers or color-coordinated sets. Here are a few examples that are going up on etsy, except for the one in front: in all the pictures I took I could not get the colors right. It has chocolate brown spacers, 2 brillant red striped beads, 2 camel striped beads and 3 transaprent topaz striped beads, but everything looks dull and dark in the pictures...

More wishing Stone focals

3 more Wishing Stone focal beads now in my etsy store.
All have been made on 2.5mm mandrels, so they can be threaded on a leather cord.

2 new focals

I am back in full focal bead modus...don't know how it happened but I actually like to make them again.
The first is a wishing stone: dark ivory rolled in silver foil, and with a sparkling middle.
The second is with shards and a murrini.

A sea inspired focal bead

This is another bead from my winged creatures series; inspired by the sea.
The transparent base is a shining Aqua, clothed in a sparkling layer of hundreds of pure silver dots.
A protective layer of crystal clear gives the bead depth and the dots more sparkle.

No beads were made last night...

...just when I wanted to get started, there were heavy rain showers and thunderstorms coming around and I turned off the kiln and concentrator. Coming up the stairs, I saw a lightning and heard thunder nearby...Three minutes later my husband's firefighter alarm went off!
This picture was taken from our front door. The lighning had struck into a house about 50 metres away from us into the chimney. It took more than one hour to get the fire out because as my husband told me later, they could not access the area where the fire started, it was in a small unaccessible "room" at the top of the house, near the chimney.
It was a very scaring experience...
Thank God no one was hurt.

2 new focal beads on etsy

From time to time, I love taking a break from making sets of round beads and dive head-first into making organic focals. Afterwards, my table is a real mess with enamels, foils, stringers, shards etc...

Back from the holidays

I love to spend time at the belgian coast...the only downfall are these awfully large buidings near the coast; most of them date back to the 1960's and are far from beautiful.
I love to go shell hunting on the beach and watching the sun sets.

Each time we got there I also take a bag with my "second choice" beads and leave them in the sand, in little excavations in the stones of the windbreaker walls etc and then sit down to watch when people walking on the beach find them.

Yes, I also know how to make focal beads ;-)

I even love to make them, but for some unknown reasons, they do not sell at all in my etsy store.
I gave up on selling on ebay about two years ago and since that time, no more selling focals :-(

Two new sets on etsy

Slowly it is time to get the fall colors out of the box...

First test bead with Lori and Kim murrini

I love using murrinis on my focal beads. I used to make them myself but then I end up with about 100 chips of the same kind and I get bored easily...so I never used them all. Besides making murrinis is a tedious job...
so I took the plunge and spent some money on etsy buying lots of small bags with wonderful little coloured murrinis inside.
Her is the first test bead made with some murrini from Lori and Kim.

Some new beads in an old favorite style

Copper blue is one of my favorite colors ever...if I had to limit myself to just a handful of colors, it would definitely be part of those.
Here I decorated it with a simple band of SIS and encased it in a thick layer of crystal clear.

In the summertime...

It is very hot here...but I got some beads made, in the late evening, when my studio was cooled down a bit, but then the kiln and the torch did their best to bring the high temperatures back...

Making room for new glass

I have several shelves full of relative thick glass rods from an unknown provenience. They are mostly from the 1950's and 1960's from an old glassblowers shop. I guess most of it should be some old Kugler or Friedrich Glashütte, but I am not sure. I am not sure about the COE either...
In order to make room for new glass, I have decided to use up all those rods and make spacer beads out of them. I have about 1.5 kilos of different colors, that should keep me busy for a while.
These are the first two colors, a striped rod half clear half opaque.
Next thing on my working schedule is a pile of glass where different COE's have been mixed. It is about 6 years old. One day my husband wanted to do me a favor and secretely built me new shelves for my then thankfully still small glass collection. And he arranged the glass rods beautifully with matching colors lying together....he did not know anything about COE....and so bullseye lay together with Moretti,Reichenbach 94 with Lauscha and the few clear boro rods were in a big pile of large Lauscha clear rods. Those will also all be worked into spacers as it nearly impossible to see what they once were.

More than 100 identical turquoise spacer beads...

During the last days I made more than 100 of these. Taking them off the mandrels and cleaning them is a real p... in the a...
Then I have to measure them with a caliper; I need 53 absolute identical beads for a very special project.

An exercice of patience

A set of 24 identical spacers; it is a real meditative act to make these...

A new bead set for etsy

Usually I only make sets of identical beads but this time I challenged myself to offer a set that has matching beads and is ready to be made into jewelry.

A very colourful set with frit mixture

Not much lampworking time these last days; I spent my time caring for our sick pet rabbit, hoefully he will be doing better soon...
Here is the last set I made before Flocki got sick: beads with a precious frit mix made of some old terra frit, Zimmermann Purple Rose special and Iris orange.

Bunny Angel

Easter is just around the corner and I love bunnies so I made some bunny angels

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

I made some earring pairs..

and yes, I have a simple trick to get 2 exactly matching beads :
I always make 2 beads on the same mandrel and I make at least 12 beads of each kind.
This way, chances are very high that there are 2 beads that have exactly the same size and design;-))

More Doublehelix...

These beads have a wonderful pearlescent shimmer, the scrolls are made with Triton.

New beads on etsy

I am known to be a glass hoarder: I buy expensive glass just to have it in my shelves, take it out from time to time, and then put it back!
This set is nearly completely made out of Doublehelix glass and is currently looking for a new home on etsy;-)
